Support Grows to Erect Dave Prowse Statue on Bristol Plinth Posted On 04 December 2020

A petition has been set up to erect a statue of Star Wars actor Dave Prowse, on the Edward Colston plinth, following his death on November 29th.

After battling a short illness, the actor, who played Darth Vader in the first three Star Wars films, passed away recently, at the age of 85. And no more than three days later, a Darth Vader figurine was seen upon the Edward Colston plinth. This has led to an attempt to permanently memorialise the Southmead-born actor. Since this makeshift statue was placed, a petition has been created, in order to gain support for a statue to be erected on the vacant plinth, which holds its own significance. Back in June, a group of anti-racism protestors tore down a monument upon the plinth, which memorialised the prominent 17th century slave trader Edward Colston, in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Along with the petition, many other words of condolence have flooded in, in the wake of Prowse’s death. Tom Bingle, a local street artist, created his own tribute for Prowse, and added that ‘Bristol has lost a son today’. The petition itself comments on the other, less noted work of Prowse, when reading, ‘He always said the work he was most proud of was as the ‘Green Cross Code Man’. The petition goes on to cite Prowse’s work with children, and his keenness to tour schools, stating that, ‘He pulled his showbiz friends into his campaigning’.

And it appears that the figurine tribute has reached the world of showbiz, with the ‘Only Fools and Horses’ actor, and fellow Bristolian John Challis, commenting on his, ‘Love that a statue of Darth Vader has appeared overnight on the Colston plinth in Bristol’. Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill also paid tribute to Prowse, and also pointed out his community work, labelling him ‘A kind man and much more than Darth Vader’.

As of December 3rd, the number of signatures stands at over 1200, and to add your name to the petition, visit: https://www.change.org/p/top-bristolian-dave-prowse-darth-vader-and-green-cross-code-man-on-the-colston-plinth
